Stabex gas launches a new depot in Nakuru

Only five percent of Nakuru residents use  liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Many residents substitute this gas with 0.7%  residents turning to  Bio gas while  0.1% uses solar energy. The biggest percent lies in  firewood and charcoal with  the numbers ranging at  46% for  firewood and 40% for charcoal. Only eight percent use paraffin.

The statistics from a recent research conducted by the Nakuru Environmental department. Nakuru Chief Officer of Environment, Mr. Mureithi Kiogora noted that the county has deliberately been streamlining the environmental fuel needs to ensure sustainability.

Speaking during the launch of Stabex Gas depots in Pipeline, Kiogora pointed out that Nakuru has identified improved access to energy as a key element in meeting its goals under the energy policy, the energy act and county clean energy plan.

“This will help facilitate and regulate the provision of clean and sustainable, affordable, competitive, reliable and secure energy services at least cost while protecting the environment” said Kiogora in his speech

Kiogora cited that the county was keen in setting a target for the adoption and use of clean cooking solutions including the enforcing of charcoal regulations.

“We are also looking to increase wood production by improving forest management as part of devolved forest extension services. This will help promote and enhance fuel-switch from wood fuel to other cleaner sources for cooking and at the same time create awareness on importance and viability of clean energy solutions,” he added

Kiogora pointed out that this will support use of clean cooking appliances by engaging youth organizations and women groups at the production, dissemination and distribution of the clean energy technologies.

“We are also seeking to facilitate private sector participation including self-help groups in provision of modern energy services by providing fiscal incentives to both producers and users” he added.

He also noted that the government has deliberated and developed strategy for the development, promotion and support to the LPG infrastructure and for spreading awareness on efficiency of LPG by raising the target from 4.7% in 2009 to 16.7% in 2020 and 25.7% in 2030

Stabex now in its tenth year aims to convert 95% users of non-renewable energy such as charcoal and firewood to use of environment friendly renewable gas.

“To achieve this main focus is to penetrate to the Peri-Urban areas and the rural areas where 98% use Charcoal and firewood. Our immediate target is first time buyers and youths/ women “chamas”, self-help groups deep into the villages and the periphery of urban centers,” said Yusuf Kemboi

He pointed out that the organization has met all Energy regulatory requirements and they are able to track their cylinders to the consumers so as to curb the fake/black market illicit trade .

They also have a ticketing system ensuring that  their consumers have been received once they purchase their products and their cylinders are serialized with unique codes that can be fast tracked using text messages to confirm its validity.
