President Kiir Urges Citizens To Avoid Propaganda And Focus On Corona Virus
JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN: MAY 25, 2020: In his state of the nation address, Monday at his residence in Juba President Salva Kiir said the Coronavirus disease South Sudan is fighting does not differentiate between religious, ethnic groups or political affiliation.
“The disease [COVID-19] we are fighting does not differentiate whether this is a Muslim or Christian, Dinka or Acholi, SPLM or SPLM-IO and therefore this is the unforgiving monster in the room.”
“I want to urge all of you to refocus your energies to the fight against Coronavirus pandemic and leave futile politicking and helpless propaganda for now.” President Kiir told the press in Juba referring to latets rumours circulating in South Sudan through faked documents believed to have been written by the president handing over power to another leader.
Kiir said there was no such thing. “There has never been any reassignment of duties of the President. The Public should not delve into propaganda.” Kiir added.
President Kiir downplayed the propaganda and said he called for the press briefing to update the country on the status of COVID-19 and operational challenges South Sudan has faced since the outbreak of the pandemic.
He said there was a serious need for citizens to remain cautious and observe health guidelines set out by the Ministry of Health in order to reduce the spread of the pandemic.
Kiir said South Sudan should be extra cautious in ensuring that the country does not experience the magnitude of outbreak other countries are facing across the globe.
“Our Health system may not be able to withstand overwhelming emergencies we have witnessed in other countries if things get worse.” Kiir said commending the Health Ministry and the National Task Force on COVID-19 for tirelessly working around the clock to continue testing people despite the limited operational capacity.
He says with an up surge of new number cases every day, extra caution needs to be taken to ensure things do not get out of hand.
“If we are not careful enough, then such numbers will shoot up and we will be in very deplorable state as [a] country to contain it [Coronavirus].
He says government has been reaching out to friendly countries, though these countries are also struggling with their own health problems, to assist in any way possible with protective health equipment to combat the Coronavirus pandemic.
President Kiir urges people residing in densely populated areas like cities and towns to keenly observe the rules of social distancing, wearing face masks and washing hand regularly with soap and running water.
“Please stay at home instead of congregating at tea stalls throughout the day. This is where the virus spread and by staying home, you would have assisted in controlling the spread of the virus.” Kiir said warning that some of the country’s top leaders have contracted the virus thus it should not be undermined.
